La Salve is a critical writing project by La Bellone performing arts space in Brussels, Belgium, led by Mylène Lauzon. With hands-on guidance by dramaturge Arnaud Timmermans, it moves away from ‘criticism’ towards ‘criticality’ (following Irit Rogoff’s essay ‘From Criticism to Critique to Criticality’) to find freer and more reflexive approaches to written engagement with performance.
Edition #15 of La Salve was the outcome of an initiative called ‘Clever Bastards’, a discursive programme brokered by Yasen Vasilev (Bâtard Festival, Brussels) between Aerowaves Europe and Bâtard to support a discursive programme linked to the Festival.
Following introductory talks and discussions at La Bellone, participants attended a performance selected by Vasilev – Yet, Light, you are Blind by Loucka Fiagan, presented at Théâtre La Balsamine. Writers were paired up, each giving editorial feedback to their partner writer, and the final texts were published a month later in La Salve #15.
The participants were Marta Buggio, Oonagh Duckworth, Caroline Godart, Zee Hartmann, Marwane Lakhal, Sanjoy Roy, Arnaud Timmermans and Yasen Vasilev. Here are the published texts:
- Night Walk Marta Buggio
- Bedrocks Oonagh Duckworth
- About Yet, Light, You Are Blind Caroline Godart
- The Monster Zee Hartmann
- Conte cruel Marwane Lakhal
- Collage: Yet, Light, You are Blind Sanjoy Roy
- Kinjutsu Arnaud Timmermans
- Haunting distortion Yasen Vasilev
