By invitation of the B.Motion festival, 10 Springback writers convened in Bassano del Grappa to devise and host an ‘Exploratorium’ for contemporary dance. They had carte-blanche to imagine, concoct and cook up new ways to enhance audiences’ experiences of, and engagement with, B.Motion’s broad and innovative programme.
The aim was to move beyond the conventional format of the after-show talk and to disinhibit participants by setting up spaces for safe, stimulating experiments and encounters. Audiences’ impressions, associations, physical sensations, emotions and frustrations were gradually to be unearthed and reclaimed as authentic and valuable upshots of attending what can sometimes be shrugged off as impenetrable contemporary art. The habitual hierarchy was to be turned upside down: artists were only to be allowed to attend the Exploratorium by specific invitation.
